70 Pinnochios an archbishop and a poet tell Cook to “stop lying”

Seventy Pinnochio nosed, ginger bearded Robin Cook lookalikes gathered oputside the foreign office calling for Mr Cook to stop lying about sanctions on Iraq.

“The big lie,” said Richard Byrne, of Voices in the Wilderness UK (1).” And this is a lie Mr. Cook, keeps repeating, is that Saddam alone is to blame for the suffering of his people. The truth is, as the Save the children Fund and Human Rights Watch say, is that sanctions have contributed in a major way to persistent life threatening conditions in Iraq. The truth, according to CAFOD, is that sanctions are humanly catastrophic, morally indefensible and politically ineffective. Today we are launching a website, www.robincook.net to counter the continued lies Robin Cook tells to try and maintain support for this gruesome weapon of mass destruction.”

Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Wales and Benjamin Zephaniah, poet, urged the British Government to “stop lying and adopt a genuinely smart policy: an immediate end to economic sanctions on Iraq.”(2)
