“Everybody nose Cook’s lying about Iraq”

A hundred Pinnochio nosed, ginger bearded Robin Cook lookalikes are expected to assemble Sunday 29th April at 1pm, outside the Foreign Office in London. The action, organised by Voices in the Wilderness (1) and ARROW (Active Resistance to the Roots of War) has been called to highlight Robin Cook’s continued lies about sanctions on Iraq and to launch Voices new website, www.robincook.net which will challenge the lies Mr. Cook tells about Iraq.

“As recently as February this year, “ said Voices member Richard Byrne, who visited Iraq in January 2001, “Mr. Cook repeated his lie that Saddam alone is to blame for the suffering of the Iraqi people.(2) Everybody nose he is lying. Save the Children know he is lying, Human Rights Watch know he is lying and CAFOD know he is lying… Mr Cook nose he is lying”

Mr Byrne was referring to recent statements made by a number of NGOs calling for an end to the sanctions. In August 2000 Save the Children and Human Right’s Watch wrote to the UN Security Council, stressing that “the Council must recognise that the sanctions have contributed in a major way to persistent life-threatening conditions in the country.”

In July 2000 Save the Children Fund UK described sanctions as a “Silent War against Iraq’s children” (3) In February 2001 CAFOD described the sanctions as “humanly catastrophic, morally indefensible and politically ineffective.”(4)

The Cook-look a likes will assemble for a photocall at 1pm at the west end of King Charles St, facing St James’ Park. They will hold a vigil opposite Downing Street from 2-4 pm.
