At the FTAA Summit... It's a Gas, Then a Disappearing Act.
Linda Dawn Hammond | 24.04.2001 07:59
Eye-witness account of a photographer and Green Party member who covered the 2001 Quebec FTAA Summit protests. Relentless teargassings and police violence. During the first day, Raphael Thierrin, International Secretary of the Greens of Canada, went missing. Stories circulating of his bizarre arrest, but 3 days later he has yet to appear or be heard from.

I reported my piece as a personal account of what I saw, as a professional photographer/artist and someone who has committed myself to such actions for over 20 years. I have not sold these photos but gave them out to Indy media- though if I could make back what I paid out in film costs, I would. I went into this situation in spite of the fact that I'm on heavy duty medication and shouldn't have even been there. I put my stuff on the web- unpaid- because after years of catering to galleries in order to have my work seen- I've had enough of it. I call this self-publishing- you can call it self-promotion if you will. Most artists are egoists. Most humans are. You're using a handle which is now a logo unto itself and unless your name is Naomi Klein, you've appropriated it to direct attention to yourself. So fuck off.
