Quick report from Quebec

Friday 20th: The Carnival against Capital gathered at Noon in Laval University, a crowd of 12,000 diverse protesters. At 1pm the crowd split into two and set off on a 45 min march towards the perimeter fence surrounding the FTAA meeting in the old fort of Quebec.Just before the fence t was announced that the people who wanted to avoid any direct action should go to the Rue Saint Jean where a street party was forming - the rest were pointed to the fence... Within 20 minutes the fence was broken down (described in the media here as able to with stand a speeding car!) The police responded straight away with volleys of teargas sending the crowd scattering. This continued throughout the day with the city filling up with tear gas choking the local residence and demonstrators alike. There were medieval catapults, samba and drum bands, and a great atmosphere whist many continued to attack the fence into the night managing to break it in 6 places.
Saturday 21st: Started in the morning with teargas and cat and mouse tactics by the gathering crowds. Masses of union marches started around the city - and a few went towards the fence to support those already in battle. The number in the street surrounding most of the fence reached 20,000. Some doing sit-in blockades and others fighting the gas, water cannons and later the rubber bullets and stun grenades. Spontaneous parties are taking over much of the town, whist the helicopters overhead indicate the fighting is continuing around the fence. Now at 2am most people have been pushed down into the lower part of town, and there are many undercover cops arresting lone protesters. - more later i need sleep...
It will continue tomorrow...
