Russian KFOR Soldier killed in Kosovo (engl.)

Summary: On April 11th a russian KFOR soldier has been killed during marking works on the border between Kosovo and Serbia. Officially, it is the first time a KFOR soldier has purposely been killed.

According to KFOR information, on wednesday, the 11th of april 2001 a group of russian soldiers, on boundary marking duty
on the borderline between Kosovo and Serbia, close to the town Zuja has been attacked with by a group of unidentified
people with firearms. One of the russian Soldiers, whose name has not been released yet, has been killed. In Brussels, Belgium
the General lieutenant Thorstein Skiaker, commanding officer of the KFOR stated that this has been the first time a
KFOR-soldier has been killed on purpose.
Even official media on the serbian side quickly blamed the ethnic minority of the Albanians for the killing, but albanien rebel
leader Leshi denied involvement, the Associated Press news agency reported."We have our own problems here and do not
need any confrontation with K-For." Leshi stated in an interview with AP.
38.000 russian are serving for the NATO-lead KFOR, which has marched in the southserbian region after Yugoslavia
has been forced to withdraw its security forces in the end of the war in Kosovo.
About 3200 russian KFOR-soldiers are now directly stationed in Kosovo.
The majority of the people, living in this region, are albanians.
Following reports of the russian TV-station RTR and the russian news agency Interfax, the russian minister of defense has
promised to provide the russian soldiers, serving for the KFOR in Kosovo, with better equipment.
