CASTOR: Anti-nuclear protests in Germany and France

In the first of a series of protests against nuclear waste transports which are due to start on Monday, 1500 mainly French and German protestors occupied Saturday the border bridge between France and Germany in the town of Kehl. Also Saturday, 16000 people demonstrated in the North-German city of Lueneburg. Near Lueneburg is the storage site of Gorleben where the nuclear waste is to be buried in a salt mine. On Friday nearby in Dannenberg, activists occupied briefly cranes which are due to be used to unload the 'Castor' tanks containing the waste.
The 'Red-Green' German government last year declared to 'abandon' the use of nuclear energy - but in fact the last nuclear power plant is to close 2019 the earliest. This reflects how much the agreement caved in to the economical interests of the nuclear lobbies. The 'Red-Green' government also agreed to 'honour its contract' to receive nuclear waste from the French reprocessing plant La Hague.
During the next days there will be a plethora of actions along the railtrack where the train is due to pass through. Police have already ordered that in the area within 50 metres on both sides of the track the constituitional right to assemble is void. In spite of a massive police operation, near Gorleben several camp sites have been established by activists.
