NUS national shutdown and student direct action

The National Union of Students have called a national shutdown on the 1st of March. Students all over the country will be striking against tuition fees, against the threat of top-up fees and calling for the restoration of the grant.
As well as the official NUS shutdown, in a lot of Universities there will be more direct action, such as demonstrations and occupations. A wave of occupations should hopefully happen all acros Britian on the same day, paralysing university admin.
If you're a student reading this, and don't know whats happening in your uni, nag your student union to promote direct action against fees and the privitisation of universities!

i wish the NUS could finally break with the Labour party- not merely opposing 'new' Labour or backing a token prolie 'true' Labour.
in fact, the NUS is hardly the organization to organize a real rebellion. hardly from the Sorbonne are they ?

NUS are crap, but subvertable

The NUS are useless, and have stood back and watched while tuition fees have been introduced and the grant ended. However, by calling a national day of action, they have provided a situation that makes it easier for students to organised more exciting direct action. Also, local student unions can be influenced by students quite easily. The NUS cannot be relied on to fight, but at times they are a useful tool to manipulate!

The NUS do not represent the students in this country. They have never supported direct action and refused to support the actions carried out during the student march when a perfect opportunity existed to take 15,000 people through a small number of police to Parliament.

Its time to create our own student networks independent of the defficient NUS if we are to progress against the system.
