FP2000 | 20.02.2001 16:38

People Awareness day to show the public we are still paying too much tax on fuel. Peaceful Demonstration on 24th February 2001 in Wales. See web site for more information of areas and dates.

Welsh fuel tax protesters say they are planning a huge demonstration this weekend.

Supporters of the Fuel Protest 2000 group will be protesting in Carmarthen, Swansea and Cardiff on Saturday.

A spokeswoman told Ananova that several areas of England will also be affected.

Shirley Jones told Ananova: "It's going to be huge in Wales. Truckers, farmers and ordinary motorists will be joining in. We're not planning on blocking the traffic but obviously it will be affected."

She added: "We need to remind the public that we haven't gone away and to remind people that they are paying over 75% tax on their fuel."

Details of the protests are on the group's website.

I agree with Greenpeace that the UK government should maintain it's tax as part of a climate change strategy and apparently 78% of the country agree that if the money went back into public transport and alternative fuels then they do not mind paying for it!
