Tube Strike Solid

G W F H | 05.02.2001 12:29

As of mid day, the strike on London Underground is total on all lines except the Victoria (Walthamstow to Brixton), a relatively short line, which has only managed about a 30% service. [#]

Local newspaper headline boards scream "CHAOS", when in fact London is a very quiet and pleasant place today thanks to the ASLEF and "others"... who must remain anonymous at the moment ! All stations in central London are locked- when a strike is unanimous, there is little need for a picket and greedy City bankers are not much in evidence, either staying at home or scrambling for busses. Overland rail services are slow and subject to delays, rather like the tube on a normal day thanks to the wretched state that successive governments have allowed it to lapse into, and which thay are now using as an excuse for the so-called Public Private Partnership, a blatant attempt to turn the tube into an underground Railtrack. No thanks!
This is the first of three planned strikes; if the others are as successful, the PPP can be flushed away !

There are also reports that taxi drivers have staged their own protest in Heathrow, but no confirmation or details are available.
