End The Sanctions! Live report from Westminster

Your Raving Reporter | 16.01.2001 14:59

14:30 .Voices in the Wilderness are currently attempting to blockade the Houses of Parliament in protest at the murderous sanctions regime inflicted on the people of Iraq. Massive police presence.

A protest march set off from Westminster Central Hall about 14:00 including contingents from RTS, a samba band, a forward guard equipped to block the traffic in parliament Square, and ViW, who called the action.
At the moment the police seem to have boxed in the demonstration, ironically, round the statue of Winston Churchill, scene of the protest on Mayday, incidentally a politician much in favor of harsh sanctions against the people of the Middle East.
Returning now to Parliament Sq: will give an update if needed.

15:15 the protest is very much winding down now. Only a part of the samba band is still playing, and a nearby pro- foxhunting vigil are standing around wondering what was going on. (one doubts that they would care very much either). Difficult to say how many arrests, if any, were made. Police presence was ridiculously high consdiering the relatively small size of the action.
