Protest against Police eviction of Ladronka(Prague)

citizen x | 10.11.2000 03:45

impromtu protest on Saturday the 11th (2pm)at Czech Embassy 95 Great Portland street WC1

Around 7 am November 9th, the doors to squat Ladronka were
kicked in by police, most of whom weren’t wearing badge numbers. A legal
observer approached them on the matter, making sure they knew that it was
illegal, but this information was ignored.
At 9 pm the police force still remains strong around the
building, and also inside where they have taken inventory of the squatters’
belongings and it is unclear whether they will be able to get them back. Six
arrests have been made, there are three people still inside and another
three occupying the roof. It’s a rather chilly night and they don’t look
prepared for the cold weather. One female is dehydrated and the police are
refusing the squatters food and water and warmer clothing. A crowd of up to
fifty people have been gathered outside throughout the day to give support
to those remaining.
The cause of the eviction was said to be illegal
electricity connections, but it also happens to be in the area where a
cosmetic surgery center is due to be erected. The mayor of Praha 6 has also
launched a campaign against Ladronka because it housed many IMF/WB
protesters. A petition was started against Ladronka during the squats
unusually crowded period around the time of the protests. The petition was
signed by 100 people, however, a counter petition was started in support of
the squat and received three times as many signatures in Praha 6 alone and
2,500 other signatures from Prague.
The value of Ladronka to the squatting community and the
locals of prague is unimaginable. “Ladronka is the longest lasting squat in
Prague. It’s been established for seven years, and has hosted many cultural
activities and concerts.” says Hubert, a supporter. Squat Ladronka’s lengthy
history has been viewed throughout the world as a tale of people overcoming
the rules society has placed on them. Cosmetic surgeons, ironicly, may have
created the end for Ladronka.

* pre post update* Police in riot gear have started to
push back the supporters. They are being aggressive, but noone appears
injured.
