Appeal to Greenpeace, and others

Corvus | 03.11.2000 18:16

Ecologists are understandably lukewarm about the farmers oil blockade. But talk about opposing it is politically dangerous.

Some leftists have worked hard trying to analyse the action and to see if there is any chance of winning over these people. But to see Greenpeace talking of counter- blockades, and of actually obstructing trucks may have an horrendous effect: it may send the protesters into the twilight of the ultra- right. It will confirm their prejudice that "townie and leftie dont care about farmer", and, incidentally, it will put you on the side of Tony Blair, Jack Straw, the SWP and other great Labour chums. Please, dont do it ! If you dont feel inclined to support the protest, fair enough, nobody will force you.
We came to a conclusion that support for the protest against Labour was justified all told. We suggested that other groups, including unions, should find a way of coming out if not in direct secondary action, then in parallel, pushing for their own issues: the unions could re establish some independence and tell Blair their loyalty was not to be taken for granted. Unfortunately, Bill Morris has joined in with Straw.
