Home Office figures show that, for the first seven months of 2000, there was a 28.93% increase in the number of deportations and removals over the same period in 1999. From 1st January - 31st July 2000, 26,515 people were deported from the UK.

There were 1037 persons recorded as being in detention(1) in the United Kingdom solely under
Immigration Act powers as at 31 July 2000, by place of detention. Lindholme detention/prison has entered the statistics for the 1st time. (Oakington, though holding immigration detainees, is still excluded).
