Comment in response to 'Censorship' debate

Gary Ramsden | 10.10.2000 22:42

This piece is a response to a post entitled 'On Censorship, the IMC Mission and Free Speech'. It accepts the right of IMC UK to assert an editorial policy but rejects the notion that free speech is only a concept rooted in Classical Liberalism and no longer relevant.

IMC Editorial

I agree that it is acceptable for the IMC to editorialise - the important thing is how it's done. Not every article can be at the top of the front page and decisions have to be made, but if the IMC is to be truly different from other forms of media it is important that editoral decisions are made openly and democratically. The a-infos news service provides a good example of this. See  http://www.ainfos.ca/

I've looked but I can't seem to find out how editorial decisions are made. If such a democratic desision making structure exists then it's not very well promoted (and it should be as inclusive as possible), if it doesn't exist then it should.

Alaister,

I agree entirely with the view that the IMC's should subscribe to democratic principles in exerting editorial policies. An open and honest process will nurture an open and honest dialogue. Emma Goldman noted that the ends can never justify the means because the means will inevitably either strengthen or distort your final goal, depending on the nature of your methods. If your tools are inappropriate your creation, not matter how skilled the craftsmanship, will reflect those inadequacies.

There is a statement of the IMC UK editorial policy in the 'publish' facility.
