Report from Prague

23.09.2000 01:28

In the past few days, the tension in Praha has continued to escalate. The city has continued to become militarised, with police appearing on every street corner. In the past 72 hours, police have been harrassing activists throughout the city. In two cases, police have detained activists after medical and legal meetings.

Last night, several IMC reporters including 4 from the UK were stopped by police after an Indymedia meeting at the Prague IMC centre. Their passports were confiscated for 15 minutes while the police scrutinised each page, copied down all names and passports numbers and used their radios to call in the details. A coloured member of the group, who had been stopped by police earlier, was singled out for more aggressive attention.

During this other IMC reporters arrived and began to film the police - the police obviously did not like this activity and soon left after a failed attempt to search people's bags.
