Trafalgar Sq Blocked

Corvus | 13.09.2000 15:09

Trafalgar Sq has been blocked from the Charing Cross Rd by about 10 trucks in the ongoing fuel tax protest.

16:00 BST. The police are keeping a low profile at present. Access to Downing St is blocked off, for some strange reason. The one voiced demand is "Cheap Petrol".
Updates on any developments to follow

BBC Report Police Road Blocks

Wouldn't normally cross post articles from the corporate media to an indymedia site unless it is really relevant - think this one is - esp as it is hidden away on the European section of the BBC website as opposed to being in their main UK section...

Fuel confrontation hits London

British police have established an exclusion zone around the centre of London to prevent truck drivers taking their protest over high fuel prices to the gates of parliament.

Dozens of vehicles are already being diverted by the police and are currently blocking main streets about a kilometre from Westminster, creating huge traffic jams.

There were reports of demonstrators in slow-moving vehicles in several other British cities.

Meanwhile, petrol tankers have been leaving fuel depots under police protection and have begun resupplying some of the thousands of filling stations that ran dry of petroleum yesterday. There were no reports of any clashes with picketers seeking to prevent the tankers from moving.

But protestors said it was time for the government to listen to the country and reduce fuel taxes. Government ministers have been meeting senior oil executives in an attempt to end the crisis. The BBC political correspondent says the government is prepared for a showdown with the protestors if necessary.
