Manchester Pride crowd figures -- organisers exaggerate by at least 500%

Alt Pride, 04-02-2007 02:38

The Manchester Pride organisers claim that 250,000 people watch the Saturday parade and similar figures have regularly appeared in the media over the years.

It seems that no one has ever thought about that figure. If you look at the facts, a crowd of that size is a physical impossibility on such a short route and on such relatively narrow city streets. Read more | 3 comments >>

If you only read the US press, you must be very confused about Venezuela

Eva Golinger, 13-01-2007 22:11

If you only read the US press, you must be very confused about Venezuela. The extreme levels of distortion, lack of fact checking and source verification and outright manipulation of information in the US media on Venezuela is quite troubling and dangerous in a nation that has waged wars based on false data and misleading policies. Berezovsky gang caught smuggling radioactive material?

Adam, 23-12-2006 21:49

Did Litvinenko and Kovtun receive the same wrong information as British detectives? That Polonium is harmless unless ingested?

"On the Health Protection Agency's website the agency says that polonium-210 is "not a radiological hazard as long as it remains outside the body" and that "most traces can be eliminated through hand-washing, washing machines and dishwasher cycles for clothes, plates, etc".
However, the only contact one of the contaminated detectives had with the poison was when he removed items such as clothing from Litvinenko's home. Evidence of the substance was reportedly found in a tea cup at the Millennium Hotel more than a month after Litvinenko was killed and countless washes. Seven bar staff who had minimal contact with Litvinenko all show evidence of exposure." - really bad advice! Read more | 5 comments >>

Beatings and Sugar Plums: New Labour's War on the Kurds

Stuart Crosthwaite, 02-11-2006 16:17

Early morning on September 5th security guards burst into the sleeping quarters of Colnbrook detention centre in west London. The guards had come to take thirty two Iraqi Kurdish men away. Barefoot, handcuffed, with the guards swearing at them, the thirty two were taken to RAF Brize Norton. Their threatened forced deportation to Arbil in northern Iraq was imminent. In response, one man slit his throat and up to fourteen others took overdoses or cut themselves in a desperate attempt to avoid "removal". One eye witness described the scene at the holding area at the airport as "carnage with blood on the walls".(1) The Kurds knew the danger of returning to Iraq. They had fled the country years before because of that danger.

Confronting Racism, Head On: WHY I WEAR MY ZIDANE JERSEY

Dave Zirin, 13-07-2006 10:01

Now the great mystery is what set Zissou off. What could Materazzi have possibly said to send him over the edge? Answers are beginning to filter out. According to a FIFA employee transcribing what was said during the match, Materazzi,s called Zissou a "big Algerian shit. A Brazilian television program that claims to have used a lip-reader said Materazzi called Zissou,s sister "a whore. The highly respected French anti-racist coalition SOS Racisme issued a press release stating, "According to several very well informed sources from the world of football, it would seem [Materazzi] called Zissou a 'dirty terrorist'." Considering a fallen world

Holly Attili and Alvarro Luque, 14-03-2006 19:50

This is an extract of a short pamphlet written in January 2006 detailing some thoughts on our current situation. This situation has remained intact for at least a hundred years past. It is not news as such but clearly is still very much a cause of great concern and will not go away as long as we are ignorant and compliant. A friend and I wrote this as the beginnings of a potential movement of discontent in Manchester and the world. We despise consumerism, our revolting spectacle society and the banality of modern life and the modern slave. We are inspired by the Lettrists, situationists, Dadaism etc. This is to be continued… Read more | 4 comments >>
