IMC Leeds open meeting, 2nd of March at Oblong

Some of you might have noticed that for the past few months imc-leeds has become a bit active again. This is just the begining, we've got big plans for the future :-)

To start with, Leeds Indymedia is soon to be renamed and cover the Bradford area too. We are now organising the launch events, one in Bradford and one in Leeds. Details will follow very soon.

But for now, if you want to get involved, come to our meeting! We meet on the first Tuesday of every month at Oblong, Westfield Rd. Next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd of March, at 8 pm (click here for a map)

Martin Shaw in Leeds: "Resisting Repression, Maintaining our right to Protest"

Martin Shaw is the activist who narrowly escaped death when the Swiss police cut the rope he was hanging from, in an attempt to blockade delegates attending the G8 summit in Evian, eight months ago. He will be in Leeds and talk at the next Leeds EF! monthly meeting, on February 4, 19:00 at the Adelphi Pub. A video will also be projected. All welcome!

Noise Demo - Lindholme Detention Centre

Saturday 31st January was a Europe Wide Day of Action against Refugee Detention and for Migrant Rights. As part of this day there was a noise demo outside Lindholme Refugee Detention Centre near Doncaster with a good turnout from from Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds.

The Sheffield Samba Band contributed to the noise and have some photos on their site.

Leeds Market Madness

People from Leeds ARC, the city's new direct action group, have been finding out the low down on big changes to the well loved Kirkgate Market. Last Saturday and Monday, people gave out leaflets, talked to stall holders and got hundreds of people to sign letters of protest to the council about the planned changes which add up to a 'yuppification' of the market.

“I don’t know what I’ll do if the market closes or the shops get more expensive. I rely on it for cheap food, clothes and household goods. It’s just another example of the poorer people being pushed out of the city centre, isn’t it.”

Asylum seekers welcome in Leeds!

On January 8 Waterside Court, the Home Office Immigration office which processes asylum claims had both the car park and pedestrian gates locked whilst protestors blockaded both entrances and leafleted pedestrians and drivers. Banners were displayed in front of the building with slogans of “No to Destitution, Asylum to all those who seek it” and “No Borders, Freedom of Movement”. The protest lasted 2 hours and ended peacefully.

The protest was to raise awareness and draw attention to the effects of Section 55 of the Government’s Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 which came into force a year ago today. Over the past year this legislation has made 7,500 Asylum Seekers destitute, many of whom then became homeless.

This Saturday afternoon several people have put together a timetable of talks, discussion and action-planning:

3 pm Talk on asylum seekers, destitution and campaigning/solidarity Speaker from Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network (LASSN).
4 pm Talk & discussion introducing Leeds ARC (Action for Radical Change), a new group starting in Leeds. Discussion on:
-big job losses in Leeds, destitution
-the G8 in the UK in 2005 – and the new network Dissent!
5 pm Resistance against the introduction of genetically modified GM crops. What's the latest situation and how to get involved.
6 pm Report-backs from 2nd European Social Forum in Paris + discussion about Local Social Forums and ESF in London 2004.
7.30 pm Book reading and talk by Rob Newman.

The Saloniki 7 have been released!

The Thessaloniki 7 were freed on bail today (26.11) the Council of Deliquencies of Thessaloniki ruled that the Thessaloniki 7 are to be set free! Our Solidarity with the Seven has worked: Our passion for freedom was stronger than their prisons! We now demand all of the charges to be dropped. Justice for the Saloniki 7!

More solidarity actions for the Saloniki 7 in W. Yorkshire

7 people are being detained without trial since the anti-EU demos of Thessaloniki, Greece in June 2003. 5 of them have been on hunger strike for between 49 and 66 days and are now on critical medical condition. Following a weekend of solidarity actions accross W.Yorks (report)it has been decided that solidarity actions will take place throughout the whole of this week as well, as the following days are extremely crucial for the hunger strikers' case.

@ 12:30 distribution of leaflets on the case outside travel agencies accross the city center. Meet outside Thomas Cook on Briggade, opposite Borders bookshop.
@ 18:00 meetings outside the Greek Consulate of Leeds. Meet at the Roundhay Fox pub, Roundhay Park (buses 12 and 2 from town).

GM out of Yorkshire! IMC Leeds talk to Bayer bashing local activists

Leeds campaigners have been part of a national Direct Action campaign to kick German lifescience multinational Bayer out of coomercialising Genetically Modified crops in the UK. Bayer, holding 9 out of the 11 applications for GM crops, are 1st in the queue if the UK government gives the green light to commercialise the growing of GM crops.

Leeds: Big Brother is watching...

Till August 1996, Leeds was the only major UK city not to have any video surveillance system installed in its city centre. Seven years later however, Big Brother has definitely arrived in town: Between 7 and 11 October, Bill Brown of the New York Surveillance Camera Players stayed in Leeds, as the guest of the Evolution 2003 Arts Festival.
In his short visit, Bill counted 153 cameras in the city centre. This occupies 16 square blocks, which means that there is an average of about 10 cameras per square block- a number bigger than the most heavily monitored neighborhoods in New York City and Chicago!

Earth First Summer Gathering

A report from the UK's biggest direct action gathering.

This years EF summer gathering took place over 5 days from 13th August on an idyllic nature reserve near Ripon in North Yorkshire. These gatherings have been taking place annually now for almost a decade and continue attract around 4 - 500 people each year. There is no hype, no big name speakers to tell you how it is, and no mass marketing campaign advertising the event in cities all over the UK: all very different from say, the SWP's annual 'Marxism' event in London.

Hyde Park Unity Day 2003: Saturday August 2nd!

This year's Hyde Park Unity Day takes place on Hyde Park, Leeds 6, on Saturday 2nd August. Unity Day is a day of celebration for the local community in Hyde Park, designed to show it at its best. Hyde Park lost a local pub - The Newlands - through riots in 1995, and this attracted intense national media coverage resulting in a negative portrayal of the area. The local community rallied to redeem the area's reputation, and Unity Day was born.

Earth First! Summer Gathering 2003

Earth First! are hosting their annual Summer Gathering between August 13-17 on a beautiful site 'somewhere' in North Yorkshire.

The Gathering provides a much-needed space for all those involved in direct action in Britain, Europe and the rest of the world - and for all those who want to be involved in direct action - to meet and talk about what’s been going on and what we’re going to do next.

Ten years on from the first EF! Gathering, some are questioning the usefulness of the Earth First! network which is seen by some as a social club and as not expressing many peoples politics. Many people are saying change is needed.

In response to recent years' events, the content, workshops and discussions of this year's Gathering have been organised so that everything is up for discussion.

Gatecrashers Ball Marred by Chaotic Policing and 3 Arrests

On Friday 4 July,thousands of citizens across the UK held parties at US military bases (Fairford, Plymouth 1, 2, 3) as part of 'Independence from America Day'. One of the main events was the 'Gatecrashers Ball' held at the US's Menwith Hill Spy Base, near Harrogate in North Yorkshire, and hosted by the Campaign for the Accountability of American Bases (CAAB). As usual, chaotic policing led to three arrests and the walk around the base being curtailed. Police also closed off the public footpath for no stated reason. One of the arrestees was detained for 'assaulting a police officer' whilst apparently trying to protect his partner from pushy police. Another was chased and arrested for refusing to remove their mask, and the third arrest was for trespass.

There is an appeal for witnesses.

July 4 - Independence from America Day: Gatecrashers Ball at Menwith Hill Spy Base

As millions of Americans celebrate 'Independence Day', thousands of citizens across the UK are today holding their own parties at US military bases as part of 'Independence from America Day'. One of the main events is taking place just a half-hour drive away from Leeds at the notorious Menwith Hill spy base near Harrogate in North Yorkshire.

Leeds Says No To War on Iraq: Round-Up

The anger against the US-UK war on Iraq, which millions saw clearly as a war for oil and US empire, produced the monster international protests on February 15^th when up to 2 million people in Britain alone took to the streets of London. Over 40 coaches went from Leeds. Although a strong anti-war movement had already emerged, February 15^th inspired the biggest demonstrations that Leeds had seen for decades.
