Unity Day was initiated by the Hyde Park Residents Association. Their mission? To
- create a relaxed friendly and safe environment
- unite the community and provide an opportunity to highlight the positive aspects of living, working, and studying in Hyde Park
- demonstrate the community's strength through voluntary involvement
- celebrate cultural diversity through art, music and performance
- create a focus point for community activities
- to unite and provide opportunities to showcase the skills, talent and nature of local people and artists
No mean feat, but they did it - and indeed DO it wonderfully every year.
People really show their creative flair - with community stalls run by local organisations, sporting and skateboard competitions, local entertainers, artists, breakdancers, bingo callers... And - of course - the MUSIC. The Unity Day Stages are a marvellous focus for local bands. There can be no doubt that on Unity Day, Woodhouse Moor really rocks.
Hyde Park Unity Day is actually a series of events - organisational, fund raising and social - climaxing with a 12 hour day of celibration for the community and visitors to Leeds 6. Co-ordinating the different areas is open to all volunteers, and the existing Unity team members and are there to welcome, help and support any new members. Each year a new team evolves through social contacts as well as Public meetings where any and all are welcome to join in and make a positive contribution of ideas and energy. There are no paid members of this team, so the professional manner in which Hyde Park Unity Day is organised is all the more impressive as it is done for fun! As the Unity Day website states profoundly:
"Its not just a question of taking people as you find them but where, how or what you leave them with."
