This fight against this supermarket continues because of the generosity towards people and the generositty of spirit. Through sub zero temps, blizzard, heavy rainfall and high winds this ragged band continues. The space has been taken by people of all walks of life, not only are we making history, we are learning how to live together. It's not easy, yet personally I havn't laughed as hard in ages and am falling in love as hard as the rain has for these trees and space.
I have found the connection between humans and nature profound. It is the tales that local people have told me of their experience of these trees in their town. How the tall large cedar acts as a shelter. How the avanue of trees bowd as families walked their loved ones to the railway station to leave home for the last time to Gallipolli in the first world war. The children walk by every day from their estate to school, a place for tricks, fags, jokes. Wating for the bus and the school run.
The kids see their world being taken as they learn about global warming, rainforest devestation and desertification. They are getting their heads around it, asking questions, making the links and viewing the big picture, so far the kids who come as reptitions of there elders say whats so great about trees, the next day come with gifts and paintings. I am here with you and for you, this is your place, what is it you want from this place? I ask....they say; skate parks, youth clubs, discos, pop groups...50 cent, Abdel I have no idea who they are, but they matter to some these kids.
Not only is this endagered eco system under threat but a huge cultural memory for the town of Shepton Mallet. For me these trees represent those who were sent to their deaths for a politicians war. If they are felled they wont have gone without a fight. And that fight is the fight from my heart through my body. It will be noted briefly by the mainstream yet it will strike a blow to all generations of this town. As the Beech tree crashed like thunder on Saturday even the councillers who gave permission for this huge mistake stood by and were shaken.
If the protesterrs were not there the sound of that tree would of gone unnoticed. People are baring witness to this and that is powerful because it set the soul on fire and peoples fight is rekindled, the fight to protect the earth and the people from our own insanity.

"These tall majestic trees stand to tell the stories of our past, present and future. To fell is to erase the memory of our identity."

We are not only battling the giants we are battling with our selves. Collective action is happening in fits and starts. I am learning a great deal. I have met some brilliently wicked borrises and borrisettes. Some are new to this and we gleam with empowerment after a days action and those who know of old work with love and encouragement. Without each other we are no thing.
