For quite a while now West Country Indymedia has had no active collective taking care of its newswire or creating features. For quite a while it has seemed sensible at this stage to simply disable West Country IMC until a new collective comes forward willing to take responsibility for maintaining it.
Contact imc-uk-network@lists.indymedia.org or perhaps imc-uk-process to express your interest or views on this issue.
Westcountry IMC is effectively closed!
Westcountry Indymedia was set up right at the begining of the regionalisation process initiated by the IMC UK collective. The process was pushed by one person with prior involvement in Indymedia and a group of people formed and signed up to the organising mailing list but for the most part remained inactive. Only two took on admin roles and both those people moved away from the Westcountry and nobody took over.
Westcountry Indymedia serves an one of the least populated areas of England but does have its share of interesting activities such as anti-nuclear camps in Plymouth against Trident, the UK's nuclear deterent and also campaigns against the release of nuclear waste in the river there. There has also been lots of anti-genetics campaigning eminating from the westcountry and then still continues in the form of campaigns against GM animal feed. The westcountry also sees activity in relating to campaigning for a better deal for farmers and also on land rights issues. There are quite a few well know land projects in the westcountry that have been instrumental in setting precedents about planning law and land use policies. The Westcountry also houses many travellers (for want of a better word) and there are often stories of outrageous evictions or inspiring resistance and solidarity. Some of the best know anti-road protests happened in the Westcountry, but they predate indymedia. The government's road building is awakening from its slumbers so expect to see more radical ecological direct action again in the future.
So, please be aware that the Westcountry newswire is unmoderated at present and likely to contain a great deal of non-westcountry content as spammers attempt to take advantage of the fact.
Please also be aware that no new features will appear here.
You are welcome to continue to post content with Westcountry ticked as perhaps another collective will relaunch westcountry.
But you a probably better of using a different portal into the IMC UK network, such as the UK home page itself.
