Bristol G8 Dissent news

Dee Senta | 11.01.2005 23:09 | G8 2005 | Social Struggles

Britain’s year as ‘host’ to the G8 has got off to a fairly high profile start as a result of the disastrous consequences of the earthquake & tsunami in the Indian ocean on 26 December. The subsequent outpouring of support & donations by people around the world (around 2$billion) has forced the G8 to play catch-up with the publics’ sense of solidarity.

This has resulted in the G8, other rich countries and financial institutions pledging over 4₤billion in aid to the affected countries. We have also seen a shameless PR exercise by leading Western politicians as they disrupt aid efforts on the ground in the region, by wandering around the area with their security corps and crying crocodile tears.

The G8, and its lackeys in those financial institutions the IMF and World Bank, have not cancelled the debt repayments from the region this year, instead they have merely ‘suspended’ the 46$billion due. Will there be interest on the unpaid interest we wonder? What conditions may be attached to this act of ‘charity’? More structural adjustment programmes perhaps (that’s privatisation to you and me)? No sign though of the affected countries 350$billion multilateral debt owed being cancelled. Take Indonesia, the over 100$billion debt it owes was largely lent to it during the reign of the despot Suharto, who built up his military & state power with it, and used all those shiny new weapons against the Indonesian people (and being used in Aceh today). Now they have to pay it back!

So whilst the G8 is in the news, there is little coverage that really reveals what the G8 does and how it does it, and what we can do about it. That is where the people in the Bristol Dissent group hope to come in, providing critical information, alternatives to capitalism, and ideas and examples of action that can be taken. If you think human need is more important than corporate greed, and that capitals apparent deathwish for the planet needs to be stopped, then read on and come along to the stuff listed below. G8 summit actions: there have been calls for actions locally and at the summit at Gleneagles in Scotland. There are no details available yet for local actions, but for the summit itself these are the ones that seem pretty certain so far, organised by a variety of groups & campaigns.

Sat 2nd July - 'Make Poverty History' march in Edinburgh, see www.makepovertyhistory.org/

Mon 4th July Trident Ploughshares Faslane Blockade, see www.faslanepeacecamp.org.uk/ and www.tridentploughshares.org/g8/

Wed 6th July INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST THE G8 SUMMIT 2005

Information about the area and targets in and around Glasgow and Edinburgh will be available at various convergence spaces, and in a pamphlet to be published by Dissent - similar to the 'squaring up to the square mile' booklet that was produced before the 18 June 1999 ‘Carnival against Capitalism’.

There will also be actions themed around the issue of precarity, work and unemployment, along with immigration/asylum (No Borders).

The Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army www.clownarmy.org are also planning fun and games around the summit and are busy boosting their numbers on a recruitment tour of the UK...keep an eye out for events in your area.

The G8 Alternatives group, a broad-based (mainly) Scottish campaign, are also planning actions around the summit, details so far unconfirmed. Check www.g8alternatives.org.uk/

What is

13.01.2005 03:02

the 'publics’ sense of solidarity'? The British public will p*ss more money into a pub urinal and spend more on metallic paint as an option for their new cars this year than they will spend on the tsunami victims or the starving of Africa. It's not the government which doesn't care, it's the people who elect them. Grim, but true.
