As a city that takes pride in its cosmopolitan and diverse nature we are keen to
promote and support the right of individuals to lawfully protest and exercise free
speech as well as being a place to which people from all walks of life can come
and enjoy our unique setting and services. This is no more important than during
our annual Brighton Festival which is an internationally acclaimed celebration of
arts and culture in the city. This festival is occurring today and will doubtless attract
many visitors and local people in addition to many other people who will come to
Brighton to enjoy the Bank Holiday.
Sussex Police and Brighton and Hove City Council have an impressive record of
working with organisers of events, marches and demonstrations balancing their
rights with those of the people who live, work in and visit the city. The organisers
of the protest you have chosen to attend have not made such arrangements. It will
be extremely beneficial to the aims of your protest and to enabling life in Brighton
to continue if you now cooperate with the police enabling such arrangements to
be made.
Please help us to ensure that this and future events can continue lawfully and with
everybody's safety maximised.
Thank you
Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett
