Statement from John Bowden

John Bowden | 07.09.2007 14:26 | Repression | World

After an international campaign in support of John Bowden and in defence of the Anarchist Black Coss, John is to be returned to open conditions.

On Friday the 31st August, representatives of the management at Castle Huntley prison and Glenochil prison met at Glenochil and agreed to accept the reccomendation of Dawn Harris [see  https://publish.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/scotland/2007/08/379322.html] that I be returned to an open prison. The allegations of social worker Matt Stillman, claiming that I was linked to a "terrorist group" (the Anarchist Black Cross) had been effectively discredited and proved false.

I would like to express my deepest heartfelt thanks to the ABC and others who expressed support and solidarity with me over the last few months, and provided me with the strength and encouragement to endure the consequences of Stillman's ludicrous allegations.

Discredited, dishonest system

08.09.2007 09:22

Mr Stillman equated the word anarchist with terrorist, so smearing Brighton ABC as well as condemning John to this unjust treatment. If his bizarre allegation can be so easily dismissed by the Scottish Prison Service now, why was it ever allowed to be used to persecute John ? What is to stop them using the same person spouting similar lies against another prisoner, perhaps one more easily intimidated than John ?

The Lockerbie trial showed the world the extent that the Scottish judicial system is corrupt, incompetent and politically motivated.
The Shirley McKie case showed there has been no safe convictions here using fingerprint evidence for the past twenty years, but also that only the policewoman daughter of a policeman can expect any justice.
Johns case shows the pettiness, dishonesty and vindictiveness of a system designed to break any spirit of opposition.

Thanks to Indymedia

Many thanks to Indymedia for helping to publicise John's situation. His struggle for Freedom is not yet over, but his return to open conditions will represent a significant victory - For the right of prisoners to hold political views and against the attempts to villify the ABC.
