TCAR (Tyneside Community Action for Refugees) | 15.05.2007 01:52 | Anti-racism | Migration | Social Struggles

This weekend actions will be taking place around the country in defence of asylum rights, following a call put out by Tyneside Community Action for Refugees. It's only by working together and building opposition locally that the Labour government's war on asylum seekers will be beaten. Please make an effort to get to your nearest action and get involved. On Saturday 19/5/07 there will be a National Day of Action on Asylum Rights. No Borders Nottingham will be in the Market Square from 3.00pm with a stall and banners. Please come along to support us in raising public awareness about asylum issues. The last two demos in the Square, which have focussed on the situation faced by the Congolese, have been big, lively and uplifting and got a good reaction from the public. It would be great to have that sort of atmosphere again, where we celebrate the world we want to see as well as protesting about the one we have. All welcome... See you there!

walk to the Midlands Enforcement Unit in Solihull where asylum seekers

the Immigration service.

The Churches' conference is hardly a radical event!

Though we welcome the Churches' involvment in defending migrants and refugees, their agendas are often rather conservative. Although some church groups and individuals do some very good work.

Best not to generalise

15.05.2007 13:57

Depends on what you call radical. Many church groups and individuals actually put their money where their mouth is and support people financially for extended periods of time, ensure safe passage back into countries when people are deported, have continued to support people long after deportation - more than many people who want to appear radical by jumping up and down shouting then disappearing when the going gets tiresomely tough. But it's better not to generalise.

I think it's good to be non sectarian and show people all the events that are happening, even if you don't agree with the politics, and even though you can't guarantee people will do the same in return. If we want more radical action, we need to lead by example and organise it.
