19th May - National Day of Action to Defend Asylum Rights

Tyneside Community Action for Refugees | 12.04.2007 21:58 | Migration | Social Struggles

Together we are stronger! Join us in a national day of action in defence of asylum rights on 19th May!

Up and down the country groups have been protesting against the attacks on asylum rights. From school groups to church groups, from the uprising in Colnbrook to the hunger strikes in Yarlswood, from individual campaigns against deportation to demonstrations organised by the Iraqi, Zimbawean, Eritrean and Congolese communities, resistance has been steadily building.

Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) calls on all those opposed to the current attacks on asylum seekers to join us in a national day of action in defence of asylum rights on Saturday 19th May.

The idea is simple. Together we are stronger. Instead of trying to organise one big demonstration in London or Manchester we are calling on groups around the country to organise a protest in their own town or city but on the same day.

The idea is for each group to have their own local demands. So in Newcastle there may be a protest against snatch squads and at the same time in Liverpool there might be a protest for the right to work for asylum seekers or against ‘fast tracking’. We can all make our own demands but we will be doing so at the same time and in solidarity with each other.

If your group decides to join the day of action please could you let us know and we can publicise the growing list of participants.

Please join us. Solidarity is strength! Together we are stronger!

Coventry to take part in National Day of Action

04.05.2007 09:12

In appreciation for this opportunity to expose the issues facing people in our city, the Coventry Peace House, Coventry Refugee Centre and Student Action for Refugees in conjunction with many concerned residents of Coventry will be working together to participate in this important Day of Action.

Our plans include a letter writing campaign, information dissemination, and a march to the Midlands Enforcement Unit, where we too will "report" to the Home Office in solidarity with the asylum seekers whose rights are denied on a regular basis.
