Glasgow: Brand Street Blockaded by Tripod

CH | 26.03.2007 05:41 | Migration

Home Office Reporting Centre at Brand Street, Glasgow is blocked with a person up a tripod.

At 5:30am, a group of people "dawn raided" the Home Office at Brand Street. There's one person up a 10 foot tripod.

This statement has been issued:
"A group of people have occupied the gates of the Home Office Immigration Processing Centre in direct response to the Government's ongoing policy of dawn raids, detainment, and deportation of children and their families.
The group believes the government must stop this inhumane treatment of people who simply want to live in safety."

Pictures and updates to follow.

Why are people blockading the Home Office?

Here's one reason. These pictures are of last week's Dawn Raid on the Waku family. The vans seen here are kept in the compound at Brand Street.

Friends of the Waku family collected more than 500 signatures and letters of protest in the short time between their detention and proposed Removal this evening. Legal action has kept the family in the country but the campaign is going to continue until the family are allowed to stay.

On Wednesday there's a protest outside the Immigration Court on Bothwell Street, Glasgow in support of the Wakus and another family facing Removal, the Aksus. It's also in memory of Uddav Bandari, the Nepalese man who set himself on fire there and died last week.

Finished After Nearly 6 hours

Just before 11:30 the protest ended with the protester carried down by police. Citing "health and safety concerns" now that TV cameras had arrived, they brought in climbers and built a set of scaffolding.
It's thought that the protester will be appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court in the morning.

Nice one!

Maybe we could blockade all the other reporting centres?

Close 'em down!

What was the impact on people signing that day?

Great idea, beating them at their own dawn raiding game. It would be interesting to know if the reporting centre was shut for signing, for how long and how those signing that day reacted to the blockade.

No problems

Unfortunately the cops were already there when we arrived in the morning so there was a bit of a tug-of-war to get the tripod in place. We had to abandon the second one. This meant the gate wasn't completly blocked and vehicles did get in and out but no dawn raid vans.

People coming to sign were very pleased to see the tripod and the banner in place. Many were registered already at the Unity Centre and so knew some of the people involved in the action.

They had no problems getting in to report.
