Stop locking up our children! TCAR demonstration 18th November

On Saturday 18th November Tyneside Community Action for Refugees held a lively demonstration against child detention and deportation in Newcastle city centre. Over 50 activists and their families spread the message about the horrific crime of detaining children through lively chanting, singing, and giving out balloons with messages from the children of TCAR members.

This is the text from the leaflet we handed out on the day. We found it really effective that children were handing out leaflets to fellow children.

The UK government currently detains more than 2000 children including babies in immigration detention centres every year. These children have not committed any crime other than being born in a country where they’ve had to flee for their safety with their parents. BUT these children are held behind locked doors and barbed wire fences for anything between 7 and 268 days! Depression, eating disorders and disrupted education is common. Many children are detained simply for the purpose of administrative convenience or before the family’s circumstances have been fully considered.

YOU WOULDN’T LET THEM DO IT TO YOUR CHILDREN, DON’T LET THEM DO IT TO ANYONE ELSES

65% of asylum seekers are failed by the asylum system, even though most of them come from countries where there is war or extreme repression such as Iraq, the ‘Democratic’ Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Zimbabwe and Iran. British companies are ruining other countries to make themselves rich and our government supports them. We should support working people like ourselves, Don’t believe the lies our government and media tell us.
END DETENTION! END DEPORTATION!
