The George's X Chalkboard would like to invite you to get involved in a project that will be running out of our premises over the next few months.
Modelling Maryhill aims initially to build a scale model of the
Woodside area, often called 'South Maryhill. The first aim is to build a visual representation of the area as it stands at the
moment. The purpose of this is to encourage people from around the Woodside area to come and get involved, change things about, swap buildings and get a developers-eye view of the community so that we can begin, in this area, to understand our needs and shape this community's future. We want to evolve our facilities according to our needs and wants for them and to project our common vision to the rest of the city and to society.
This is an area under threat from mega developments, such as New Dundas Wharf and New Rotterdam Wharf (which when completed will fundamentally change the nature of this area and begin to price ordinary locals out), from school closures (which will make our communities less workable), from demolitions, from council cuts and from council neglect. It's about time we as a community got together to map our own future and presented an alternative vision of how community groups, residents associations and people power can build a sustanable future for our community, and for our kids to grow up in.
The project will involve a variety of tools from door to door
surveys, the use of the model in the drop-in centre, questionnaires, social mapping and a variety of desk-top publishing tools. At the moment it is an open book, and how we proceed depends on what enthusiasm we have from locals. Drop us a line and get involved!
