Prisoner support assembly in Edinburgh

ab | 07.07.2005 15:21 | G8 2005

A prisoner support assembly in front of the Sheriff Court, Chambers Street Edinburgh took place just 30 min ago.

One person was arrested, police claiming for breach of bail conditions.

About 50-100 people gathered spontaneously in Chambers Street in front of the Sheriff Court to shout their discontent about the police and court proceedings.

Slogans were shouted like "Freedom of Movement is our right - we are here and we will fight" as well as "No Justice, no peace - fight/fuck the police".

At the start there were onl;y few policement present (about 2) they were quickly joined by others, asking a man to get on the pavement and then arresting him.

When the crowd noticed, the people came over to support the arrested and then the FIT team etc. came.

One policeman asked said they would have arrested him for breach of the bail conditions.
When asking around though I was told the bail conditions would be restricted to the area around Princes Street and north of it.

More police came including the FIT team and the gathering disolved itself as the police moved forward, the people non-confrontationally got back towards Bristo Square and seemed to disperse on the way.
