sorry, but that is nonsense.
.mov is not a codec. It is a quicktime wrapper (which is fairly cross platform) that contains a video encoded using a codec such as mpg4, or divx etc.
.avi is also a wrapper and not actually a video compression format. It is microsofts wrapper and may contain video encoded using a wide variety of formats (including mpeg4) or even raw uncompress video direct from DV.
.mpg (or .mpeg) is usual an mpg1 enconded video, which is an old format which is pretty good for screening and distributing video on CDROM but not compressed enough to be very useful for clips on indymedia. An mpg1 video requires about 10mb per minute while other codecs might be ten times smaller.
mpeg4 or divx is small and cross platform. It is far from perfect but widely used and an international standard. Almost everyone can play mpeg4 and it can be supplied even in it's native format .mp4 or within an .avi or .mov wrapper
There are open source video codecs.such as vp3 or thedora but only geeks are likely to have the codecs installed.
mpeg4 or divx is almost certainly the best compromise at the present time
