The activists from Faslane Peace Camp called for an end to the UK retaining Trident, and to the UK's part in international instability with its constant threat to use WMD's.
At around 10.30pm last night a mechanical saw is believed to have been used to cut a large hole in the weld mesh fence so that activists could enter the base. Carpet had been thrown over razor wire to help access.
The nuclear weapons base was closed for six and a half hours while the Bandit Alarm sounded, and base security were "running around like headless chickens" trying to contain the massive breach of security.
Activists said they were very happy with their action to highlight the dangers of the UK WMD, and the dangers of a new nuclear weapons replacement for Trident. One activist said "We are disgusted and shocked by Tony Blair's decision to demand a replacement of the Trident Nuclear Weapons system."
"The Government's plans for new nuclear 'defence tools', currently being researched and developed at Aldermaston, will make these illegal weapons easier to use and to murder life" claim the activists. The UK would remain a "nuclear terrorist for another generation."
The action is part of Faslane Peace Camp's 23rd Birthday Week which ends with a Birthday Bash at the camp on Saturday 11th June from 6pm (details below).

BACKGROUND NOTES
Faslane is where the UK's 4 Trident nuclear submarines are based. They are a first strike weapon with the destructive power of 1000 Hiroshima A bombs.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) have not challenged claims from expert opinion in an English court case that a replacement of Trident would breach the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to which the UK is a signatory.
The activists claim that the UK is not living up to it's agreements within the Non-Proliferation Treaty through the continued possession of Trident and now plans for it's replacement. The activists also believe that the extension of a mutual co-operation deal between the UK and US involving nuclear research and materials, known as the Mutual Defence Agreement (MDA), is also in breach of the NPT.
The action was organised by Faslane Peace Camp. The camps' anniversary on the 11th. June marks 23 years of ongoing resistance to the base for the UK's WMD on the Clyde.
Further actions are planned. In opposition to the G8 delegates arriving in Scotland everyone is being invited to take part in a mass blockade of Faslane Trident Submarine base from 6am on the 4th July. G8 details on 0845 4588366 http://www.faslaneg8.com

Fourteen activists have now been arrested. One of the two climbers came down at 4.45pm, the last still remains up a tree inside the base!

I wouldn't be too eager to spread the news of 23 years of protest - someone might start asking why YOU'VE GOT NOWHERE !!
Get real .. go and do something useful.
Cynical

like, er, making negative comments on indymedia!
Seriously though, well done, probably cost them a lot of money by the time they've upped security in that tree, done a review, infiltrated your group to provide MI5 with details of how much money your jumble sales are raising etc. etc.
