American Indians Protest Scottish Power - July 16 - 24th
Support native American Indians from the Karuk, Yurok, Hoopa, and Klamath Tribes as they journey to Scotland to protest Scottish Power's control of the river Klamath. These tribes from Northern California and Southern Oregon evolved with Salmon, which are now being decimated because of the series of dams blocking migration. These dams are owned by Scottish Power.

The tribes will be in Scotland from the 15th to the 24th of July.

There will be a protest at the Scottish Power Shareholder's meeting on Friday, July 23rd in Edinburgh. There will also be a salmon-bake on Thursday, July 22.

The original colonialism targeted the destruction of the American Buffalo to get rid of bothersome natives. Although it may not be as direct, today, we are seeing the same process through the destruction of a cultural base, spiritual well being, and, of course, food source. Under US law, these dams are currently under review. Several Tribes and community and environmental groups are trying to decommission the dams, and open over 350 miles of spawning ground back to the salmon. The downstream tribes are experiencing massive poverty and major health issues because white europeans have stolen their natural wealth.

The Karuk Tribe was the richest tribe in California in 1840 (Pre-major contact with white culture) and now they are one of the poorest community in California! The effects are very real, with high rates of diabetes, heart disease, nervous tension, obeseity, and other ailments associated with moving from a diet rich in protein and fish oil, to one of starches and sugars (from commodities provided by the US government).

The dams are used for diverting water to industrial agriculture, and for a small amount of electric power generation. Please help support and elevate this issue.
