Information on a proposed Aberdeen Social Centre

trained_chimp | 04.12.2003 15:11

A centre for the free social and artistic expression of the Aberdeen population has been proposed by a local group.

The proposed social centre will be a self-funded public resource for community organisation. Volunteers would run the centre through decisions made by consensus. It will be involved in activities including community and workplace organisation, social events and social improvement. This centre will not be affiliated with any social or political institution, and would maintain its independence.

Activities proposed so far include: a cafe providing hot meals to the underprivaledged; discussions, conferences and forums on important local national and global events; supporting a local artistic culture through exibitions, theatre and music.

The centre would be non-profit and non-commercial. income for the development of the centre and its activities would be from fundraising activities.

We are in correspondence with organisations which are considering providing a venue for the centre.

We believe a humanitarian centre such as this would be a valuabe contrubution to the city and the area. The centre would provide an excellent base for social change, helping people to join together to support each other, without the constraints of an often claustraphobic and controlling society.

Anyone in the area that wishes to join or aid us, or anyone who has experience of creating such a centre, or individuals who have any ideas or suggestions, please email us. We consider your contribution and input to be very valuable.
