Motorway inquiry protest planned

CAMPAIGNERS are set to appear in pantomime costumes today to lobby the start of a public inquiry into one of Britain’s largest road projects.

The protest follows 379 objections to the planned M74 extension through Glasgow, which is expected to cost up to £500 million.

The inquiry, which is expected to continue for a month, was triggered by 40 objections from businesses and residents directly affected by the planned five-mile road.

A total of 265 compulsory purchase orders have been issued to acquire land for the motorway, due to be completed in 2008 to ease congestion on the M8 through Glasgow.

M74 protestors put on pantomime
The official Public Local Inquiry into the extension of the M74 motorway gets underway today.

Some of the three hundred and seventy objectors will put forward their case along with the trunk road authority who are proposing the route.

Protestors, including Green MSP Patrick Harvie, are planning to express their disappointment about the public consultation process by staging a pantomime outside.
