Street medic training teaches people to provide medical support and emergency care to people on the streets at rallies, mass demonstrations, marches, and sites of civil disobedience or direct action. Those trained as street medics are able to provide education in health and safety issues to activists and provide aftercare to participants in mass demonstrations and other actions.


Learning how to provide medical assitance need not mean solely doing so at demonstrations. Medical knowledge is a vital skill for self-sufficient communities. Possessing medical knowledge allows an individual to play an active part in community activities, and reclaim their body from the paternalistic medical establishment. Medical knowledge is often used as a weapon, the denial hereof allows individuals and institutions to control peoples and populations; in South American indigenous communities the first action of the state has been to assassinate native doctors and destroy the traditional knowledge base to force the communities to submit to external authority.


This introduction provides essential first aid knowledge, as applied to actual street experience at mass demonstrations and direct actions. This includes treatment protocols for common and likely injuries such as:
* police/security guard altercations - eg. bruising, internal organ damage, fractures, head and spinal injuries, handcuff aftercare, "rubber" bullets and live ammunition.
* bleeding and haemoraging.
* environmental issues - eg. frostbite, hypothermia, heat exhaustion, heat stroke.
* chemical weapons - eg. tear gas, pepper spray.
* emergency care for pre existing ailments - eg. asthma, epilepsy, diabetes.


NB. CPR training is not covered in this course but is highly recommended as an essential complement to skills learnt here.


As the trainers will include a very experienced street medic trainer, this is a rare opportunity to learn valuable skills. Our ability to provide this training is dependent on the interest we receive. We would also appreciate contact from anyone who could help to coordinate. There will be a suggested donation but nobody will be turned away because of inability to pay.
