It was a three-horse race between Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats with the Liberal Democrats already holding the ward's other seat and the Conservatives only being beaten by a 37 vote margin at last years' local elections.
The results of the by-election were as follows:-
Roy Darke (Lab) 548
Marc Borja (Con) 443
Ruth Beer (Lib) 378
Katherine Wedell (Green) 62
The victory can be put down to hard work reconnecting to the voters, particularly on the Northway estate. The Labour Party needs to reconnect for many reasons but this is an example of reconnecting with people and it paying the party back electorally. I can only hope the party learns this lesson nationally.
