REMEMBER "MEMORIAL DAY". . . . REMEMBER SMEDLEY DARTINGTON BUTLER, MARINE.

x, etc | 23.05.2008 15:36 | Education | Globalisation | Terror War | Oxford | World

This weekend is "Memorial Day" in the USA, that version of the "eleven on the eleventh of the eleventh", the commemoration of the exact time of the end of WW1 in Europe. These days, as we remember the eleventh, or at other times when we remember all those that have died or got caught up in the damage or waste of war, its worth taking the time to hear the words of heroes - top brass too - that have looked back on their experience with enquiry, to see why it all kept happening, then to try to do something to stop it. Good times were good, friends met, all that . . . . but the waste is hard to take, there are lots of other ways to discover heroism, worth, teamwork, etc . . . .

Most of all this is a "jump off" to further research.
Its hard for people who have spent time in the forces, USA or UK, in the last years, not to have a few doubts.
Lots of us have old schoolfriends, relations etc who joined up for loads of reasons . . . . quite a few good reasons too.
The marine mentioned above was in charge of the US marines for much of the early part of the last century.
He wrote a bit after.
You dont have to agree with all that he wrote to get something out of it . . . . he mightnt these days. The attitude itself is encouraging though - uppity in a good way - as number two in the US army - he was sacked for criticism of the dictator in charge of Italy at the time, so went to take charge of the police of one of the biggest US cities, doing a good job, it seems, then was approached by a few US "big biz" types to front up a coup in the USA against FDR "after Europes pattern" but sent along a local journalist he'd worked with as "intermediary" - then shopped them to Congress. Much of it was hushed up after, but some records remain, whereas others were put back together from congressional staff reports by a couple of journalists in the sixties . . . .
. . . . rumours that these people were in actual fact the puppets of fraudsters links all this to the theme of the "remember each eleventh" campaign week in europe - but its all worth a look.
Good to share a drink sometime . . . .

. . . . you could post this to some old friend or relation, etc too . . . .
cheers - good luck with "after" - see y'later !
Search engines might point you at much of it, but its also worth looking
