Perhaps it would be more effective if students, unions, etc became more involved in the issues that affect people who are voting BNP and the root causes of their growth : housing, welfare cuts, the NHS, poverty, and yes, mass migration without adequate resources. You want to make martyrs of the far right, then go ahead, but watch as they grow to Le Pen levels as you ignore the reasons for their success. As many have observed on here, when it comes to protesting about the 'day to day crap' people face, (see above), many of these 'protestors are nowhere to be seen. Indeed, the TUC for instance, part of UAF even supports the welfare cuts!

...I agree with the comments that the only way to beat the BNP is to remove the social base for their support - but it does not mean you cannot confront them at the same time. Its best to do both. Simply rubbing the BNP out and notjing else would be suggesting that society was perfect apart from them - clearly bollocks.

However you choose to fight injustice and inequality, its a good idea to take the fash out along the way as they will hinder your every step.

Traditionally students in and around things like UAF or ANL have not had a very good effect on the BNP, but if Griffin is actually going to talk IN THEIR UNIVERSITY they are completely within their rights to do whatever the fuck they like to stop it from happening. Especially considering it was at the invite of an actual fascist student, not some bizarre free speech gambit by the uni. This should be treated like a fascist meeting anywhere else. Tackle Griffin and tackle the lad who invited him.

I'd advise you to have a few groups about as well as the main high visibility demo thoughout the building to keep your options open depending on what happens. If you make it clear to the union that there will be a headahce for them, they'll cancel in advance. They have done the same elswhere.

I am all in favour of denying a platform to people whose views I disagree with. I suggest the National Union of Students publish a list of what organisations are authorised to speak to students. Any not on that list should be prevented from speaking.

Just a wee thought, but wouldn't it be better making Griffin reluctant to take a platform, as opposed to making University's etc reluctant to give him one? I mean come on, arseholes like Griffin should be encouraged onto platforms so as we can demolish his arguments and logic. If we cannot do that, then it really is a sad fucking day. An etch-a-sketch and a calculator should do the job.

Those with anti-racist impulses will not be swayed, those with racist or more likely, fear about immigration, might well agree. What you're asking is for a bunch of lefty students to outsmart a professional politician who's been answering the same questions for 20 years.

The Left are supposed to be all about real democracy. It infuriates me when they advocate free speech on the one hand, and then on the other hand wail like banshees when someone whose opinion they disagree with has the gall to speak their mind in public. Instead of wasting time with demonstrations such as the one planned for Bath, what people should be doing is organising effectively and coming up with a real political alternative that appeals to the general public.
