An interesting piece and one I can echo from my time in Iran. The future of Iran has a hard line Islamic state continues to look shaky. The Ruling Elites fear of a US invasion and Iraqi style removal from power for most of them is very real. The concessions they made over the visits to their Nuclear Power station were an example of their desire to be seen to be playing the game.

Iran far more than other fundemental Islamic countries fears education (the traditional destroyer of religious influence and power) to a greater degree than most because it still has a well educated middle class in exile left over from the Shah who are ready and willing to return and run the country when the Islamic zealots fall from power.

Iranian oil is running out ( current estimates indicate less than 14 years) and when the oil is gone the money is gone. When the realities of the Islamic corruption can no longer by hidden by the spending of the Mullahs the people will react. By this time they will also be seeing the fruits of the US investment in Iraq and will be calling for their own.

So Iran's next on the list for 'liberation' by US/UK forces yeah?

To clarify

I don't think for one minute the US or the UK intend to invade / liberate (you choose) Iran but I do very strongly believe that there are many within the Iranian ruling/ religious establishment who think they very well might and this generates both fear and confusion.

The overwhelming military victory of the US/UK forces in Iraq astonished the Arab / Persian world as the Iraqi armed forces were seen as very formidable. A war lasting months was assumed to be likely. The complete (in military terms) of the victory was not what was expected.

It has been very, very hard for the Iranian clerics to begin to prepare the people for eventual trade and contact with "The Great Satan" but that process has already started. They are deeply fearfull of the US troops who in some cases are less than 2 KM from the border.
