On Monday, campaigners angry at Sri Lanka's recent military assault on the Tamil Tigers organised a protest outside Nottingham's Trent Bridge Cricket Ground.

The recent raid at a school in Sneinton, which saw over 100 people arrested for 'conspiring' to take action at a local coal fired powerstation, costs the police around £700,000. The costs of Operation Aeroscope, were revealed as a huge surplus in the Notts Police's budget for 2008/9 as recently presented to the Notts Police Authority. Apparently 'attempts will be made' to get some of the money back through central government (Home Office) but it seems most likely the cash will come straight off the budget of the Notts force, possibly leaving other services under-financed.

On Thu 14th May it will be exactly one year since the wrongful arrest of Hicham Yezza under the Terrorism Act. Hich was cleared of any involvement in terrorism but was immediately detained again for alleged immigration offences. The Home Office is still trying to deport Hich to Algeria. Please join us by taking whatever action you can on the anniversary of Hich’s arrest. We need to highlight the injustice and exert pressure for his release before it is too late.

Those arrested have been released on bail following questioning related to “suspicion of conspiracy to commit trespass and aggravated criminal damage”. The police are saying that those arrested were “planning a period of prolonged disruption to the safe running of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station”. The Nottingham Evening Post, in it’s usual measured and objective style, is saying that there was a “plot to attack a power station”.

More than 80 people (over 100 according to BBC Today programme) arrested in Nottingham on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated trespass and criminal damage at a power industry facility.

In May 2008 Hicham Yezza, an IT technician at the University of Nottingham, was arrested, together with student Rizwaan Sabir, in a well-publicised anti-terrorist swoop. They had downloaded al-Qaida material from the US Department of Defense website as part of Sabir's academic work on terrorism.
