Cambridge Named UK Claims Capital

Legal Reporter | 30.06.2011 12:42 | Analysis | Other Press | Cambridge | Liverpool

Cambridge, more well known for its University than its claim culture, has come top in a survey of UK accident claimants. The city topped the UK claims league, beating Aberyswyth and Coventry to top spot.

UK University town not too posh to claim

• Almost one in three Cantabragians admit to making personal injury claim
• Cardiff and Swansea residents most likely in the UK to call their parents following an accident
• 1 in 4 Glaswegians have no idea how to claim after an accident
• 1/3 of Brightonians feel too guilty to claim

CAMBRIDGE may bring to mind images of gentle river punts and historic buildings, but the city is quickly becoming famous for being the claims capital of the UK.

In a study conducted by LawOptions.co.uk, the online claims management company, the University town beat out a host of competitors including London – which despite being identified by the majority of the respondents as the area most likely to hold claimants didn’t even make the top ten.

At the other end of the table, Gloucester had the lowest number of personal injury claimants with less than one in ten pursuing an accident with legal action (6.25%).

Ian Fitzpatrick, Partner at Lawoptions.co.uk said: “It’s interesting to see that Cambridge tops the claims table, as it’s seen as such an idyllic place to live but the research we conducted reveals that it could be Britain’s accident hotspot.”
While they may be viewed as some of the most feared football fans in UK, the report has shows that Cardiff and Swansea residents are the biggest softies when it comes to their parents.

LawOptions.co.uk found that almost one in three people in the Welsh capital (29%) and Swansea (34%) would call their Mum and Dad to inform them that they’d been in an accident before calling their insurer or the police.
The study also showed that people on the South Coast care about each other – with more than three quarters of people polled in Southampton and Brighton said they had no need to make a claim for compensation.

More than this, Brighton residents also felt the most shame in a claim, with 31% saying that they would feel too guilty about claiming from another person to pursue a claim. This could result in millions of pounds annually being left unclaimed by its rightful owners.

A further statistic that backs this up comes from Glasgow, where one in four admitted that they have no idea at all how to pursue a claim, of those that did claim 40% were for an injury sustained at work.

The survey also showed that London is perceived to the UK’s claim hotspot, with every region in the UK selecting the English capital as the place most felt a claimant would live. The only city not to select London as the most claim heavy region was Liverpool. In an interesting move, the Merseyside city pointed the finger at the North West as the area most likely to be the claim capital.
Ian Fitzpatrick from LawOptions.co.uk continued:

“We know that the British stiff upper lip usually means we keep quiet about things like claiming but there is no reason to suffer at the hands of somebody else. Hopefully after seeing this table and some of the facts from our research the public will understand that there is no shame in a claim.”
