Defusing Dissent
19.03.2005 13:07
Well, today, 19th of March is the perfect day to illustrate how Indymedia and the faux left will be conspiring to keep an issue out of the public domain. Thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of people will be travelling to London today to demonstrate against the continuing occupation of Iraq and for world peace. Everybody involved, from drummer to plackard waver and Indymedia cameraperson to the pensioner who quietly marches with everybody else will feel like they are contributing to a massive event. And up to a point, they are. But apart from those that march, those at home who couldn't afford to go (like me), the police and a few thousand busy shoppers en route, who will know about this 'show of strength'?
The whole event is a safety mechanism, as far as the 'government' is concerned and it will be managed to ensure that it has as little impact as possible. The leaders of the SWC (mainly SWP) will have agreed a march route with the police, no doubt on the grounds of the safety of the marchers. Maybe the terrorist threat card was played. The route will inevitably cause some inconvenience to London's busy consumers but the route will meander in the least inconvenient, thus least visible way. If it goes anywhere near any government building, that building will be shielded by fencing (electrified in the case of the MOD on February 15th 2003 - I have images to prove this).
The mainstream media will have journalists present and it will appear that the whole event is receiving huge coverage. Apart from February 15th 2003, when the BBC's et al's hand was forced by shear unexpected numbers, there will be little or no coverage. How do I know this? Well I have attended just about every demonstration but last year illness forced me to miss one of the larger events in London. Instead I sat glued to BBC News 24 for the whole day and there was no coverage whatsoever (unless they snook it in during th few seconds that I flipped to Sky News and ITN).
In the meantime, Indymedia will act as a reservoir for peoples' opinions and a place to exhibit their photos. All safely out of the public view. Because despite the aspirations of those that contribute, and whilst it pretends otherwise the only readers of Indymedia are the previously converted.
All nicely packaged up and out of the way.
This mechanism has a name, coined by Herbert Marcuse, it is repressive desublimation. It is the safety valve which governments use to defuse dissent. If demonstrations were not permitted anti-government feeling would escalate and the possible consequences could be explosive. Now the dissent is controlled even further, often with the unwitting co-operation of the protestors. Possibly with the co-operation of the leadership of the dissent groups. The clichés are as valid as they have ever been. Divide and rule. Keep your friends close but your enemies even closer etc.
Many dissent groups and Indymedia are like flypaper and are easy pickings for the security services. There is no doubt that most involved with Indymedia are genuine individuals but there is equally little doubt that there is an element within which is being handled from elsewhere and consequently working to eliminate the real truth of what is going on in favour of a Michael Moore 'truth lite' which can be easily spun.

Vary Your Diet Then!!

Arguably, the main reason why most people both contribute to and come to the Indymedia sites is simply because they are the most prominent and familiar.
That doesn't mean to say that they are the ONLY 'alternative'.
In other words, vary your diet, people.
Be a media omnivore!
