which runs westward from Cambridge.
and the last thing the city needs is more cars coming in from the west or any
other direction. The Highways Agency claim to have figures which show that the
extra traffic using the dualled route would not be "new" but would come off
other routes, but is this really a tenable position -- especially as it didn't
form part of their original statement of case ? (The 1994 report of the Standing
Advisory Committee on Trunk Road Assessment, which has been accepted by the
Government, states that more road capacity does lead to extra traffic,
especially where the existing network is close to capacity, as is the case here
at peak times.)
Transport 2000 Cambs & W Suffolk is pushing for an alternative scheme involving
a combination of bus priorities, better public transport, and park & ride. For

wasn't till after this newsletter was written that we received the Highways
Agency's rebuttal of our objection, in which we first heard their claim that the
dualling wouldn't result in extra traffic.
