A discussion with the leader of Pakistan Labour Party, Farooq Tariq, has been organised by the Pakistan Solidarity Campaign. The meeting is convened just as the leaders of the Pakistan People's Party(Bhutto's party) and Pakistan Muslim League(Nawaz) have announced their failure to restore the judiciary demanded by the various movements in Pakistan, particularly the Lawyers movement. Please try and attend as the meeting might give us the oppurtunity to discuss what we can do to support the lawyers movement and other democratic and civil rights movements in Pakistan.

Farooq Tariq is a leader of the Labour Party of Pakistan. His Party has taken a very active role in the democratic, trade union and civil rights movements in Pakistan. He was arrested on various pretexts under so-called anti-terror legislations by the military regime. His Party, as part of All Parties Democratic Movement, boycotted the recent elections. The movement demanded the restoration of the judiciary that was sacked illegally by the military as a condition of their taking part in the elections.
He will be coming from Pakistan having just attended a very important peasant’s conference in Punjab, which is demanding landownership rights for the peasants whose lands have been confiscated by the Pakistan military over decades of military oppression against peasants.
With the global economic crises the war on terror and the critical food shortages burdening heavily on countries like Pakistan, the discussion will provide an opportunity to discuss first hand experiences of those bearing the brunt of the impact of the globalisation process and the “war on terror”.
