Hospital blitz on deaths in custody

COPS are joining forces with hospital Accident & Emergency staff in a bid to prevent more deaths in custody. Around half of all deaths in police cells involve detainees with some form of mental health problem.

Heartlands Hospital and police in Stechford, Birmingham, have linked up for a pioneering pilot scheme where officers assess suspects for psychiatric problems.

Under the project, those who police feel may have mental health issues are taken to A&E for treatment, rather than a police cell.

Heartlands A&E consultant Tony Bleetman said the scheme had already proved a success.
