Word on the Street: Benefit gig for the homeless

From 8pm - late on Friday 23rd December @ The 5 Lamps Pub in Derby WORD ON THE STREETS shall be showcasing an eclectic cast of live music in order to raise money for the homeless. Please come down and show some support as well as having a jolly good festive knees up.

Symbolically the Christmas period is a time for creature comforts in the presence of family and friends. Typically homeless people lack intimate relationships and are isolated from normal social supportive networks. Thus at this time of the year the harsh reality of homeless lifestyle become is more apparent. A one night only music event, ‘Word on The Street’ has been organised for the 23rd December 2005 to raise money and boost awareness of homelessness in the local area.

Homeless people are amongst the most vulnerable people in our society faced with a combination of poor housing, unemployment, low income, bad health, poor skills, loneliness, isolation and relationship breakdown. Figures published by the charities Crisis and Shelter indicate the UK currently has approximately 400,000 people lacking a place to live that is supportive, affordable, decent and secure. Padley centre is a Derby-based charity founded in 1985 delivering services to people with complex needs, working with some of the most socially excluded people in the local community. Around Christmas the Padley centre (Sadler Gate, Derby) will be pushing there winter initiative to help support struggling members of our community to move on from difficult pasts, by building self-confidence and providing a safe environment with food and shelter. All proceeds from ‘’Word on the Street’’ will be donated to The Padley Centre to help fund there current and future projects.

On Friday 23 December 2005 ‘’Word on the Street’’ will commence from 8pm until late at the 5Lamps pub, Duffield Rd. The evening will showcase a selection of eclectic local music talents include live hip hop from Alex Blood and Mr Crowe along with live rock-pop from bands The James Warner Prohphecies and The 45 Rebellion. The evening will be also see DJ Hudson spining some funk classics while the Trinity B-Boys demonstrate their dance floor talents.
