DON'T RUSH TO JUDGEMENT

Mike Tyson has had, from childhood, a very unfortunate background. And a Black male being raised by white parents (who couldn't teach him how to socially handle and watch out for himself in a racist society, when being a Black male raised by *Black* parents is hard enough to cope with in a racist society) means that he was in *DOUBLE* jeapardy when it came to socially and emotionally watching out for himself in a racist society that has plenty of deeply ingrained, often subconscious, negative stereotypes -- and especially negative sexual stereotypes -- against Black males.

I don't know for sure what did or didn't happened between Tyson and the young cheeleader woman who claims that he raped her -- no one does. But, I can tell you that a Black female (and being Black she would be more socially aware than even most white female cheerleaders) who has been a cheerleader ever since she was a teenager -- and having thus been around plenty of athletes -- of *whatever* color -- for years and years -- almost *all* her teenage and adult life, wouldn't for a **millisecond** believe that an *athlete* (particularly one with Tyson's supposed negative reputation) in a major high school, college, or professional sport was going to invite her up his his hotel room for *merely* an autograph (which he could have given in the hotel lobby). So, *why* did the young cheerleader woman go up to his room? That's not to say that the cheeleader would deserve to be raped, if it happened; but it does strongly suggest that Tyson had been set up (and certainly not every rich professional athlete that has been accused of rape has *NOT* been found to have been set up), as he had been, caught offguard, by another women, like his former wife actress Robin Givens, in a different way, in his life.

You can bet that if Tyson had been an ordinary Black guy -- instead of a high profile, rich Black athlete -- and his accuser was an ordinary Black woman, no one -- not the police, not the press, not the judge, and not most white people -- would have really cared -- or taken it that seriously -- especially where the objective evidence was lacking or totally not clear -- that he was accused of rape. In Tyson's case, the judge and jury essentially just took the woman's word for it -- which doesn't happen in the case of white males (especially white male celebrities or other rich white males). And what kind of trial do you think that most Black men get in Amerikkka? -- especially where the attitude of a majority of whites is that most poor (or at least born poor) Black men are NATURAL/GENETICALLY *BORN* "SUPERPREDATORS"? (Yes -- that's the word that the white American media use in high profile criminal cases.) We never hear nearly as much about all the white celebrities who beat their wives/girlfriends or have been accused of rape. White society *LOVES* to have their "BLACK BOOGEYMAN OF THE MONTH/YEAR" sociopolitical football (to risk mixing a metaphor) at least every few months as another one of "THE BLACK MEN WHITES LOVE TO HATE."

Back off, stop jumping on the hate bandwagon, let him know that not ALL white people just love to hate white-so-called "notorious" Black men, and give Tyson some emotional room to grow and experience something besides controversy and/or hate or being used in his life.

no excuse for rape

12.11.2005 10:31

There is never any excuse for rape, by what ever colour. The logical conclusion of your approach is that rapists are to be catagorised by the colour of their skin! That is racism in itself, the singling out of one skin for different treatment than the other. It is condenscending and patronising to assume that he is somehow morally inferior because of his background - there are plenty of poor, disadvantaged white people, so would you justify them in the same way? I doubt it.

So far there, in what I have seen, there has been little focus on Tyson's ethnicity, and rather on his behaviour. A society which is on its way to equality in the races is one which can criticise individuals on the grounds of their moral behaviour and not on the colour of their skin.

And this article is a comment, not news. Go blog it.

a black day for IM

Joeseph Anderson has every right to post his comment as it was a direct response to another IM article and made several serious points - none of which Mark Moody-Stuart addressed or seemed to comprehend. I hate rape, I hate boxing but I also hate self-righteous racist liberals trying to impose a false consensus (I don't mean Mark but many others who constantly criticise Tyson certainly seem more motivated against some criminals according to their skin colour). Tyson is a convicted rapist but there are many, many rapists at large in the US uk sporting world and none of them receive the vitriol and harrassment that Tyson receives, few are even prosecuted let alone convicted. Why could that be ? Tysons second crime was rape, his first and most unforgivable crime was being born the wrong colour in a racist nation.

You think I don't know

Radical noise ? Black music.
Illegal sales district ? Black market
Stock market crash ? Black Monday

The bad guys wear black
Evil mistress ? Black Widow
Followed by evil ? Black shadow
When disease wipes out millions of people -

You think I don't know
Subconscious psychology reversed
You think I don't know
that everything you fear is black

I am black and aware
So beware as I cross your path
For I am the one that brings bad-luck
Black cat

Do you just hate the convicted rapists ? Most rapists go unconvicted, most go uncharged.
Personally I think it more of a concern that PC Dean Stewart is walking the streets rather than Tyson.

Or this cop

Given Tysons reputation it is unlikely he poses as great a risk to anyone as these cops do. Yet no fuss about them being free to walk the streets here.

"Illegal sales district ? Black market
Stock market crash ? Black Monday"

I'd be happier to believe this was the result of racism if people also referred to the white market and said stock market booms happened on white monday. As it is, the latter almost certainly comes from the fact that in Western cultures black is colour of mourning, and that various market trader types think that losing lots of money is worse than death. It's also worth noting that when a company or economy is doing well, it is said to be in the black.

"The bad guys wear black"

I think this is rooted in the same logic as above. Plus the baddies actually wear black, whereas black people are actually brown. Which to me makes the direct link between skin colour and clothing colour a little spurious. Also, in the bible, death rides a pale horse, the antichrist rides a white horse, and it's only Famine who gets a dark-coloured steed.

"Evil mistress ? Black Widow "

Black Widow is usually used to describe someone who kills their husband rather than just an "evil mistress". And given that the phrase comes from the black widow spider, which is so-called because it's black and kills its mates. So it's a bit silly to say that's racism.

"Followed by evil ? Black shadow "

Ever seen a white shadow? On a similar bent, having a black cloud hanging over you is obviously down to black clouds bringing crappy, miserable weather.

PS: in Britain it's good luck for a black cat to cross your path, in the US it's bad luck. Which all goes to show that we live in a world where simply blaming bits and pieces of the language on racism is a little too simplisitc.

Sorry FTB, I'm only defending my comments - if you want to go head to toe with the Dream Warriors then you are about 5 years too late and rather lacking in the rhythm department. And anyway, if you are so smart then what is your definition of a boombastic jazz style ?
