In the five years since the Mexican government declared the “War on Drug Trafficking” at least 40,000 people have been killed, countless tens of thousands have been kidnapped and entire towns and neighbourhoods have been depopulated. Mexico's conflict is the deadliest in the Western Hemisphere, and is the most dangerous place in the world for journalists.
The violence is mostly focused in Mexico's north, where cartels and corrupt politicians battle for control over profitable smuggling routes. Ciudad Juárez, just across the river from El Paso, Texas, had over 3000 recorded murders last year- officially the most violent city in the world.
A Brightonian activist who has has recently returned from working with activists and street artists on the Mexico-US border will be talking about the situation there, with a focus on what North Mexicans and border activists are doing to combat the violence and militarisation.
There will also be a discussion about how we can work in solidarity with Mexican activists from here in the UK.
