DOZENS OF DEER RETURNED TO FREEDOM, IN MEMORY OF BARRY HORNE (Spain)

anonymous communique (translation):

"A few months ago we learned that a company called Venison Deer (www.venisondeer.com) located in Marugán, Segovia, was engaged in raising deer to sell their dead bodies to restaurants and butcher shops. In addition, some of these were used to repopulate hunting grounds and others sent to a hospital in Toledo as if they were just material to be experimented on.

We believe that all animals with the capacity to suffer are entitled to certain undeniable rights. Perhaps the most important of these is the right to not be used as a resource. These deer were being exploited as if they were a source of food, a resource for those who take pleasure in killing and a resource for the laboratory. Undoubtedly, Venison Deer is an example of how all forms of animal exploitation are interrelated and are equally objectionable.

After several weeks of researching the business and numerous evening visits to the farm, the night of October 30th we went to the town of Marugán to return freedom to the deer that the speciesist businessman Javier Martín had stolen from them. For more than three hours we cut the wire fence, and sabotaged the all-terrain vehicle and the electric generator. After having torn down more than half of the fence, we led the deer towards the multiple avenues of escape. We know that at least 50 of them managed to regain their freedom and we think that at dawn many more would realize that there was now no fence to prevent their return to the fields. Anyway, if any were left inside, we will return for them.

We frame this liberation as part of the actions in memory of our compañero Barry Horne, who gave his life on November 5, 2001 in a hunger strike for animal liberation.

Frente de Liberación Animal"

Are personal attacks justified?

The attack on the personal property of an employee at their home goes beyond the bounds reasonable direct action in my opinion.

Are personal property attacks beyond the bounds of reasonable direct action? No.

When RBS director Fred Goodwin's home was attacked (windows smashed and car damaged), the vast majority of the comments in newspapers by average members of the public were positive. Accepting that it was justified due to the responsibilities of his position, actions and job.

When Blackwater USA killed innocent Iraqi civilians i'm sure many would find it entirely acceptable to attack property belonging to employees and those that fund it. Or EDO which supplies weaponry parts for use against Palestinians, employees by nature of their continuing employment accept the actions of their company. If they did not they would be walking out of that door and never coming back or going on strike until the company changes it's actions.

So no one cannot say personal property attacks are not beyond the bounds of what is acceptable across a blanket of all cases. What many people interpret as justified may not be accepted by others, but such is life and nobody will ever come to a consensus on it.

By working for a company that maims & tortures innocent life the person in question has to accept that their actions have consequences not all of them positive. By being a part of a company that wilfully funds and carries out torture, they are like it or lump it condoning the actions of that company by continuing to accept blood money for their labour. And thus are a legitimate target for direct action.

You personally 'Jo Public' do not have to carry out such actions, nobody is asking you to. Activists who carry out direct action do it of their own accord as they feel it is justified in order to fight against the wider suffering that is taking place. An attack against non-sentient metal, glass and rubber does not even begin to compare with the direct suffering that is inflicted upon sentient creatures in the name of profit and capitalism. It's not in the same league.

It takes all sorts to make a movement, some individuals might prefer to stick to relatively peaceful means others might take a more direct approach. We need all of the approaches in order to move forwards. Liberation struggles in all countries have always including a direct action element to their campaign.

Each to their own...

There is great diversity across the many protest movements in the UK, and because of this every person isn't going to agree with every type of action - it really is down to personal preference.

There are some people who think a peaceful road blockade to save the very planet they live in is going too far, others think it's ok to take animals from laboratories, some think it's ok to smash up edo's work site, some think causing damage to a car is ok, and lots of people supported the RBS window smashing - at a home address (which I would say is far worse than damaging a car!).

If you disagree with a type of direct action, then do what you believe is the right and most effective way to deal with the problem and prove to others your way is better, because I am sure the people breaking the law would rather not risk going to prison. So if you can find them a way that will work that is legal I'm sure they would take part.

Whilst these people breaking the law are now criminals, I don't think they take that decision lightly.

We are just talking a bit of criminal damage, there are kids out on the streets doing far worse. In my opinion putting paint stripper on a car is in no way comparable to the harm inflicted on to animals in laboratories. I would say if activists were putting the paint strippers into vivisectors eyes, then they would draw even.

Taking unlawful direct action is not something I would personally chose to do, because I wouldn't want to go to prison, as I have a family to support. I don't personally know to what extent paint stripping a car aids a campaign as I am not that knowledgeable on the subject, however I do agree with the goals. All the petitions I have tried to get filled in on stalls hasn't made the blindest bit of difference, so maybe these people will have better luck than me. We're all on the same side, so good luck to everyone, in whatever method you chose to close down these vile places.
